Meet Aki Higashihara. She might look like your typical Japanese pin-up with a blog and a smile, but she is anything but. This is the woman who could be killing the Nintendo Wii. The woman with the worst luck of all time. Here’s a rundown of her run-in with unfortunate events. Anyways, her blog isn't called THE DEATH BLOG without reason.
An ongoing legend circulating in the Japanese internet forums is regarding the Japanese celebrity Higashihara Aki (東原亜希). Currently 27 years old, she can be see on television in the role of variety shows, sports anchor.

What's remarkable about her, is that a great deal of the things she mentions or makes a remark about tends to meet an untimely demise and implode by sheer chance or bad luck within a timespan of roughly 3 months.

That year, equine influenza spreads in the Japan Racing Association stables forcing races for that year to be canceled. Vodka develops an inflammation of the ankles and cannot race as well.


• 2007/9/23, selects the most favored horse as the one she will bet on in the Kobe Newspaper Cup (horse racing). The record of 100% of most-favored horses winning for the past 10 years is blown away as the horse finishes in 12th place.


• 2007/12/23, after only 3 months as a regular host on the horse racing program "Super Keiba", the show is cancelled after a 20 year run.


• Marries Inoue Kosei in 2008/1/15. 4/29, he loses out on the Judo championships and is not selected to represent Japan for the Summer Olympics.


• Every contestant in the K-1 Kick boxing Grand Prix she has rooted for has been defeated.


• 2008/2/28, appeared in a promotional event for McDonald's --> The brown worm-like parasite Anisakis,Terranova is found from Fillet-O-Fish patties the following day.

• Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare --> The ministry is mired a series of scandals such as bureaucrats mentioning women as "baby-making machines" in discussing the declining birthrate, financial records of pensions are revealed to be a complete mess and some parts are irrecoverable.


• Goes on vacation to South Korea --> The Korean Won plummets.


• Sends a message of encouragement to fellow celebrity blogger Ogura Yuuko --> A fire erupts at one of the Yakiniku stores owned by Ogura.


• Puts photos of a pizza she ate at the family restaurant chain Saizeriya on her blog --> A scandal where trace amounts of the poison melamin is found in Saizeriya pizzas occurs.


• Writes comments of endorsement for a book. --> Publisher files for bankruptcy.

That’s pretty terrible.

Well this same woman has a blog that has become quite popular on the internet in Japan, especially due to the fact that everything she involves herself with seems doomed to failure.

Well she just took on Nintendo. It’s the latest addition to her blog.

She writes that she's playing Mario, and it looks like she bought the Wii Sports Resort bundle with the new Wii Remote Plus controller. This comes as Nintendo Wii sales slow drastically. Coincidence? Dun dun dunnnnn.

So what does this mean for Nintendo? Are the Kinect and Move really going to blow it out of the water? Can one woman’s run in with misfortune take down the gaming tycoon?

First Look at Microsoft Surface Computer

The Idea

Microsoft Surface fundamentally changes the way we deal with digital content on a computer.

Instead of working with a dull mouse and keyboard, which is not very intuitive to all users, we will be using our hands and fingers to operate the Microsoft Surface.

We can grab data with our hands, move it around by performing simple gestures, and this even with multiple persons simultaneously.

All computers only have a single input device which is the mouse. The surface on the other hand is a full multi-touch device, supporting up to 52 touch points (that are a lot of mouses).

The Outside

The Surface itself it built as a small table, where the plate itself is the multi touch device.

Because it looks so natural, it can easily be included in various surroundings.

The surface of the Surface, is a kind of matted glass material, feeling really soft to the fingers, and allowing fast movement.

The viewing angle and brilliancy of the screen is made so a lot of users can have a clean image, when surrounding the table.

The Inside

The inside of consists of 3 major parts:

• Near infrared camera’s
• A computer
• Rear projection system

In total, there are 5 camera’s monitoring the surface for movement tracking. The reason Microsoft uses 5 camera’s, is to solve field angle problems. Each camera monitors it’s own small area of the surface, resulting in better speed and resolution. It was also needed to get the table as low as it is now.

The camera’s themselves can read unlimited numbers of touch points on the surface. The limit of 52 is only set because of CPU processing limits.

The computer inside the Surface is a high-end machine, but runs on mainly conventional components. It is powered by a Core 2 Duo 2.13 Ghz CPU, and has 2GB of RAM.

The Operating System on the surface computer, is a standard non-modified Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. An extra layer is running on top of this windows vista, called the shell.

The read projection system, projects the computer’s image to the underside of the tabletop.

Communication

The Surface offer 3 ways of communication:

• WiFi
• Ethernet
• Bluetooth

There are already sample application using the WiFi possibilities to automatically load content from a wireless device, if put on the Surface.

Development

To develop Surface application, there is a choice between Windows Presentation Foundation and XNA. Custom WPF control have been built to support the Surface specific interactivity.

The development can be done using the Microsoft Surface SDK, which integrates with Visual Studio 2008 and allows the developers to run a Surface Simulator to test the application locally on a windows vista machine.
